It was established in 1975 by the Sri Lanka Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC). There are almost elephants which breed in the surrounding with more than 60 female elephants and more than 40 male elephants.

 

The Pinawela Elephant Orphanage was first established in Wilpattu National Park.

Then it was transferred to Bentota. Then it was transferred to Dehiwala Zoo. Then it had been transferred to Pinawela. From 1975 onwards the elephants had not been transferred elsewhere. So Pinewale Elephant orphanage now remains the safe custody of elephants.

 

The entry tickets in the Pinawela Elephant orphanage are very expensive. The tickets are more than 750 Sri Lankan rupees per person. Children are also supposed to pay half fare.

 

Visitors are first taken to the site where the baby elephants are fed with milk. In the shed it the visitors are inclined to feed the elephants with milk then they have to pay to do the same. The milk is provided by the Orphanage. Then they are taken a site where there is a restaurant. The restaurant is situated near a river. It is called Ma Oya river. The elephants come over there to have bath. So the tourists can enjoy the lunch and at the same time see the elephants have bath. Food is expensive in Sri Lanka. There is no dish below 1000 Sri Lankan rupees. But the ambience of the hotel is very nice.

 

There are 48 mahouts who take care of the elephants in Pinnawela Elephant orphanage. The mahouts know about the problems of young elephants and wherever they get injured they take care of them. Even blind elephants and those elephants which have injured legs are taken care in the orphanage.

 

Among many other projects in Sri Lanka which impress the ecologists and the environmentalists the care given in the elephant orphanage is worth special mention.If visitors come to Sri Lanka they should definitely visit the orphanage.

There is wide variety of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. But the ambience of the hotel is very nice.
